Snow Patrol | VW T4 Snow Tyre Test | Michelin Agilis Cross Climate

In a previous video I bought a new set of Michelin Cross Climate tyres and modular steel rims for a planned trip to Scandanvia where in winter you must have proper winter tyres by law – unlike here in England where snow is still rare but seemingly becoming more common each year.

Anyway, when we had some good snowfall I jumped in the camper van and headed off to some local back country lanes to try the tyres out.

I was really impressed!

Why use three peak rated tyres?

Three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) rated tires are designed to meet specific performance criteria for winter conditions. These tires are important for winter driving for several reasons:

  1. Enhanced Traction on Snow and Ice: 3PMSF-rated tires are engineered with specialized tread patterns and rubber compounds that provide improved grip on snow and ice-covered roads. They have deep grooves and sipes that bite into the snow and ice, offering better traction and control.
  2. Shorter Stopping Distances: Winter tires with the 3PMSF rating can significantly reduce stopping distances on snowy and icy surfaces compared to all-season or summer tires. This enhanced braking performance is crucial for safety, especially in emergency situations.
  3. Better Handling in Cold Temperatures: Winter tires maintain their flexibility in cold weather, allowing them to conform to the road surface and provide better handling and stability. They remain effective at lower temperatures, while non-winter tires may harden and lose grip.
  4. Improved Stability in Slush and Sleet: 3PMSF-rated tires are designed to perform well in various winter conditions, including slush and sleet. Their tread patterns and materials are optimized to prevent hydroplaning and maintain control in wet and slippery conditions.
  5. Enhanced Traction During Acceleration: These tires deliver improved traction during acceleration, reducing the likelihood of wheel spin and loss of control when starting from a stop, especially on inclines or slippery surfaces.
  6. Reduced Risk of Skidding: Winter tires help prevent skids and sliding on icy or snow-covered roads. Their specialized tread patterns and rubber compounds promote stability and control, even in challenging winter driving scenarios.
  7. Compliance with Legal Requirements: In some regions or during certain times of the year, the use of 3PMSF-rated tires may be a legal requirement. Failing to use appropriate winter tires in these situations can result in fines or penalties.
  8. Reduced Wear on Non-Winter Tires: Using winter tires during the winter months can extend the life of your non-winter tires. By switching to winter tires when needed, you reduce the wear and tear on your regular tires, ensuring they last longer.
  9. Enhanced Safety for You and Others: The improved performance of 3PMSF-rated tires in winter conditions enhances overall road safety. These tires reduce the risk of accidents and collisions, not only for you but also for other road users.
  10. Peace of Mind: Winter driving can be challenging and stressful. Knowing that your vehicle is equipped with 3PMSF-rated tires can provide peace of mind, knowing that you have taken steps to maximize safety and control in winter weather.

In conclusion, the importance of 3PMSF-rated tires for winter driving cannot be overstated. These tires are specifically designed to excel in cold, snowy, and icy conditions, offering better traction, handling, and safety. Investing in high-quality winter tires is a responsible choice for anyone who drives in regions prone to winter weather, as they significantly reduce the risks associated with winter driving.
