In this video, I show how we transformed our van to sound like a Golf inside!
Seriously though, in the previous video I showed how we added additional sound deadening to the front doors, sliding doors, side panels and rear barn doors.
The difference in road noise was significant!
In this video we take things even further in our quest to reduce road noise as much as possible in our VW T4 Transporter campervan, by stripping out the front seats, lower dash center console and rubber floor mat, so that we could install even more sound deadening and even more insulation.
Now we literally feel like we are driving around in a normal car instead of being killed by incessant road noise that is characteristic of cargo delivery vans.
Hope you enjoy this video and get inspired to do this upgrade on your camper van build with sound deadening so you too can travel in car-like comfort.

Adding sound deadening and insulation to a campervan can be a crucial step in enhancing your overall camping experience and comfort, especially if you plan to spend extended periods traveling in your van.
Here are several reasons why it’s important:
- Noise Reduction: Sound deadening materials, like acoustic foam, mass-loaded vinyl, or insulation with sound-dampening properties, can significantly reduce the noise from outside sources such as traffic, rain, wind, or noisy campsites. This creates a quieter and more peaceful environment inside your campervan, which is essential for relaxation and a good night’s sleep.
- Thermal Comfort: Insulation plays a pivotal role in maintaining a comfortable interior temperature in your campervan. It helps keep the cold out during winter and the heat out during summer, providing a more consistent and comfortable environment. This can reduce the need for excessive heating or cooling, ultimately saving energy and fuel costs.
- Condensation Control: Proper insulation can help prevent condensation inside the van, which can lead to mold, mildew, and damage to your vehicle’s interior. Insulated walls and ceilings maintain a more stable temperature, reducing the risk of moisture buildup.
- Energy Efficiency: Insulation can improve the energy efficiency of your campervan. It reduces heat loss in cold weather, which means your heating system doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature. In warmer weather, it helps keep the heat out, reducing the need for excessive air conditioning.
- Year-Round Usability: With proper insulation and sound deadening, your campervan becomes more versatile. You can comfortably use it in various climates and seasons, whether you’re chasing the sun or embarking on a winter adventure.
- Privacy and Security: Thicker walls, insulation, and sound deadening materials can enhance privacy by reducing the chances of sound escaping the van. This is particularly important if you’re camping in close proximity to others. Additionally, a well-insulated van may deter potential thieves, as it’s less obvious that someone is inside.
- Resale Value: Should you decide to sell your campervan in the future, a well-insulated and soundproofed interior can increase its resale value. Buyers often look for campervans that offer better comfort and amenities.
- Comfort and Well-Being: When you’re spending extended periods in your campervan, comfort and well-being are paramount. A well-insulated and soundproofed interior creates a more pleasant and enjoyable living space, which can significantly impact your overall satisfaction with the camper.
While adding sound deadening and insulation to a campervan is important, it’s also essential to strike a balance between insulation and weight. Adding too much insulation can make the van heavy and affect its fuel efficiency. Therefore, it’s crucial to plan your insulation strategy carefully, considering the climate you’ll be traveling in and your specific comfort needs. Ultimately, a well-insulated and soundproofed campervan can greatly enhance your traveling experience, making it more enjoyable and practical for all seasons and environments.
