Choosing the Best Tires for Overlanding in a volvo xc70

Welcome back to another installment of my Volvo XC70 ex-ambulance transformation series! In previous videos, I tackled mechanical fixes, got the vehicle through its MOT test, and even gave the big yellow bonnet a striking contour-lined overlanding graphic. Now, it’s time to focus on something crucial for any serious adventure build: tires.

Why Tire Choice Matters

When it comes to selecting tires for my project cars—whether it’s the T4 camper van or my Volvo XC70—performance is key. I need a tire that offers excellent road handling for long drives while also being capable off-road. However, I’m not aiming for a hardcore mud-plugger look; instead, I want something rugged yet refined—something that can handle dirt tracks and wet roads with confidence.

On my VW T4 Wonder Wagon, I opted for the Michelin Agilis CrossClimate tires. They’ve been fantastic, offering great grip and durability. Initially, I was tempted to fit the same to Ragnar, my Volvo XC70 overland build. Interestingly, both vehicles share the same standard tire size: 215/65/16.

The Choice: Falken WildPeak A/T3W

After much deliberation, I decided to go with the Falken WildPeak A/T3W tires. These all-terrain tires are designed to handle both on-road and off-road conditions while maintaining a quiet, comfortable ride.

And now, I’m taking them on their first drive.

First Impressions: Exceptional Grip & Control

Right off the bat, I can feel the difference. We’ve had a lot of rain lately, and I’m currently driving on a muddy, pothole-ridden backcountry lane. The grip and stability of these tires are noticeable immediately—far superior to the Pirelli Scorpion STRs I had before.

Even on wet tarmac, the increased sure-footedness is apparent. The car feels more planted, more predictable, and overall, far more confidence-inspiring.

Simply put: these tires are amazing.

The Ultimate Test: UK to Tuscany Road Trip

Of course, a first drive is one thing, but the real test will be our upcoming road trip from the UK to Tuscany. This journey will take us through all sorts of conditions—motorways, winding mountain passes, gravel tracks, and maybe even a few unexpected detours. I can’t wait to see how the Falkens perform in the long run.

What Tires Do You Run?
