Welcome back to another update in my Volvo XC70 ex-ambulance transformation series! In previous videos, I tackled several mechanical issues, got the car roadworthy with an MOT, and even gave the bonnet a striking contour-lined overlanding graphic. This time, I’m addressing a frustrating steering issue that makes slow-speed maneuvering feel like a workout.
Diagnosing the Steering Problem
At moderate speeds, the steering feels just fine, but when I’m navigating a parking lot, it becomes extremely heavy. To troubleshoot, I decided to start with the simplest solution—flushing the power steering fluid. Since I have no idea when it was last changed, this seemed like a logical first step.
If flushing the fluid didn’t solve the problem, my next steps were:
- Lubricating the universal joints (suggested by another XC70 owner)
- Replacing the power steering pump (which, fortunately, isn’t too difficult to do)
Removing the Old Power Steering Pump
To replace the pump, I first needed to remove the power steering belt. The tensioner is located behind the top idler pulley and requires a Torx bit (I was hoping my T55 would work, but it turns out a T60 is ideal). With some effort and a smaller ratchet, I managed to release the tension and remove the belt.
Next, I loosened the three bolts securing the pump—two at the front and one at the back. I also disconnected the high-pressure hose and the return hose. As expected, this made a bit of a mess, so I stuffed as much paper towel in the area as possible to soak up the leaking fluid.
Once the last bolt was removed, I pulled the old pump out. Judging by the residue buildup and the amount of fluid leaking, it had been failing for quite some time. No complaints about replacing something that was clearly worn out, especially since I’m planning a road trip in this car!
Installing the New Power Steering Pump
The new pump looked identical to the old one, though it had no markings. There was a bit of fluid inside, which was a good sign—it hadn’t been sitting dry. I positioned it in the cradle, aligned the four mounting bolts, and tightened everything up.
With the pump securely in place, I:
- Reattached the hoses
- Ensured there were no leaks
- Slipped the belt back on by releasing the tensioner again
Testing the New Pump
With everything back together, I topped up the power steering fluid and took Ragnar (yes, that’s my car’s name) for a test drive. As I turned the wheel, I could feel an immediate improvement. The heavy steering was gone, replaced with smooth, responsive handling!
Mission accomplished. 🚗💨
Final Thoughts
This entire process took less than an hour—definitely a job that anyone comfortable with basic tools could tackle. If you’ve ever assembled IKEA furniture, you can do this! If you’re experiencing similar steering issues in your Volvo XC70, this might just be the fix you need.
