The “Morning After” Test – A Color Change Was Needed
After painting our cabinets and support beams, we stepped back the next morning to evaluate how the color looked inside the van. Unfortunately, the aquamarine shade we had initially chosen didn’t quite pass the “morning after” test. While it beautifully matched the wave patterns on the exterior of the van, it didn’t complement the tones of our patterned vinyl panels inside.
So, we made a trip to our local DIY store and had a new color mixed. This time, I did what I should have done from the start—I took a sample of the fabric we’re using for the interior and had the paint color matched. The new shade is a much better fit and blends perfectly with the overall aesthetic of the van’s interior.
Paneling and Insulation Upgrades
If you’re wondering about the yellow panel in some of the shots, that’s a cover for an insulated section over a large glass window. Because this area is behind the cabinets, I decided to insulate it more heavily than before. The yellow panel will be installed over that section, adding an extra layer of warmth and efficiency.
Bed Cabinet Progress – More Storage and Comfort
With the color issue sorted, we moved on to the next stage: finalizing the bed cabinet build. The new shade looks fantastic alongside the vinyl paneling, and the yellow on the inside of the cabinets adds a fun contrast. When the cupboard doors open, the bright yellow interior gives a nice pop of color, making it both stylish and functional.
Space-wise, sitting on the bed platform, I still have about 10 cm (6 inches) of headroom, even considering the mattress that will eventually go on top. That’s a relief, as we wanted to ensure enough sitting space without feeling cramped.
Adjustments to the Main Cabinet Fascia
One unexpected change came when fitting the main cabinet fascia. Initially, I had designed a small support leg to separate the toilet door from the fridge. However, the fridge turned out to be slightly wider than advertised, so I had to trim that section off. I’ll now be fabricating a sliding mechanism to accommodate both components while maintaining accessibility.
Wrapping Up
Overall, I’m really happy with how things are coming together. The color swap was absolutely worth it, and the adjustments to the cabinetry will make a big difference in maximizing space and usability. Next up, I need to decide on the countertop and finish installing the remaining facades.
