VW T4 Camper Van Build #1 | Choosing our van conversion for a family of 5

Our VW T4 Camper Van Build

Why did we choose a Volkswagen Transporter T4 LWB High Roof to convert into a campervan? Why not a “normal van” like a short wheel base T4 or a Sprinter or Crafter or Trafic?

This video is the first in the series of our diy conversion camper van build – starting with why we chose the van we did and some insight into how we traveled as a family of 5 before.

The layout can become tricky if you need a full size three seat rock and roll bench seat that becomes your main bed – and you want a kitchen in the camper too!

Plus you need to think about your kids being safe in the back while you go on adventures all over the UK and Europe.

Buying a VW T4 Transporter, or any van for that matter, can be a daunting task. My advice is to think about how you will realistically use it – especially if you\’re a family of five with older children.

Hopefully you will find this video series interesting – please subscribe to follow our conversion progress from an empty van to camper van.

Happy days!

Thoughts on choosing a VW T4 for a camper van conversion

Choosing the right Volkswagen T4 van to convert into a campervan is a crucial decision that will impact your comfort, convenience, and enjoyment during your adventures. Here are some key considerations to help you make an informed choice:

1. Budget:

  • Determine your budget for purchasing the T4 van and converting it into a campervan. Keep in mind that conversion costs can vary widely depending on the features and materials you choose.

2. Condition and Age:

  • Decide whether you want a diesel or petrol Transporter T4 van. While newer vans may have fewer mechanical issues, older models can be more affordable. Inspect the van carefully for rust, mechanical problems, and overall condition. Like many older vans, T4’s have common issues so try to familiarise yourself with those before handing over your hard earned cash. Never buy sight unseen!

3. Size and Model Variant:

  • The T4 was available in various sizes and configurations, including short-wheelbase (SWB) and long-wheelbase (LWB) options. Consider the size that best suits your needs for sleeping arrangements, storage, and overall space.

4. Engine Type:

  • T4 vans came with different engine options, including diesel and petrol. Choose an engine that provides the power and fuel efficiency you require for your travels – if you need to access the ULEZ then check and check again that the van is compliant. The two common diesel versions are the 1.9 and 2.5 – although there are early 2.4 versions also – they do not have a turbo – They are slow so don’t plan to get anywhere soon. The 2.5 tdi comes in a few variants the most common in the UK are the 88 AJT and 102 ACV – the engine is basically the same with a few differences. The 102 ACV has an intercooler fitted on top of the engine as standard and reverse gear is back to the right. The 88 AJT has reverse gear forward to the left, the same as the 2.4 variants.

5. Transmission:

  • Decide whether you want a manual or automatic transmission based on your driving preferences and comfort with the chosen transmission type. Word is avoid the automatic versions as the gearbox can be problematic. Ask if the gearbox has had the “5th gear mod” – which is a lower ratio fifth gear that makes cruising and mpg so much better. We fitted a .62 ratio 5th gear and the difference is incredible.

6. Maintenance History:

  • If buying a used T4, review the maintenance history and service records. A well-maintained van is less likely to have mechanical issues.

7. Mileage:

  • Consider the mileage on the van, as it can affect the vehicle’s overall condition and potential repair costs. Lower mileage may be preferred, but higher mileage may still be acceptable if the van has been well cared for.

8. Pop-Top or High-Top Roof:

  • Decide whether you want a pop-top roof (which provides additional sleeping space and better ventilation) or a high-top roof (which offers more standing room and storage) and also doesn’t make a noise when the wind is blowing!

9. Conversion Features:

  • Determine which features you want in your campervan conversion. These may include a kitchen, sleeping area, dining space, bathroom, and storage. Consider whether you’ll build the conversion yourself or hire a professional.

10. Legal and Registration Considerations:
– Research the legal requirements and registration process for campervans in your region. Ensure that your converted T4 meets the necessary safety and regulatory standards.

11. Test Drive:
– Before finalizing your purchase, take the van for a test drive to assess its driving performance, comfort, and handling. The T4 is known to have shifting issues because the bushes in the gear linkage wear out and can make it difficult, if not impossible, to change into third and fourth especially. Thankfully it doesn’t mean the gearbox is knackered, the bushes just need replacing.

12. Resale Value:
– Consider the potential resale value of the T4 van in the future. Popular models with well-executed conversions tend to hold their value better. Beware of VW scene tax! Don’t pay over the odds just for a VW…

13. Personal Preferences:
– Think about your personal preferences, such as the van’s color, interior design, and any additional features you may want. Sometimes starting with a blank canvas is great if you have the enthusiasm to do a “van build” your self.

14. Future Plans:
– Consider your long-term plans for the campervan. Are you planning to use it for occasional vacations, extended trips, or full-time living? Your plans may influence the van’s size and features.

15. Research and Expert Advice:
– Conduct thorough research, read reviews, and seek advice from experienced campervan owners or conversion experts. They can provide valuable insights into choosing the right T4 model and conversion options.

Ultimately, the best VW T4 Transporter van for your campervan conversion will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. Take your time to evaluate different options and choose a van that suits your travel style and adventure goals.
